The Golden State is Fully Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of the state is experiencing water scarcity. This landmark event arrives after difficult years marked by insufficient rainfall that exacerbated wildfire risks and pressured its massive agricultural sector.

A Chart Shows An Absence of Abnormally Dry Areas

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program illustrated that all of California is free from any level of drought. This shift resulted from a period of above-normal rainfall that replenished major reservoirs like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve always lived in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a weather expert.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

The path to this point involved severe and lethal winter storms that battered the state in the not-too-distant past, resulting in widespread flooding, electrical failures, and fatalities. Although that weather helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

As late as late December, regions like Modoc County were still classified as unusually parched. Heavy rains at the beginning of January eliminated those final dry conditions.

A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average

But, hydrologists note that drought-free conditions does not mean having no water worries. Recent measurements of the high-elevation snow place it at roughly seven-tenths of the historical norm.

This mountain snow, which provides approximately 30% of the state's water supply as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for long-term water security. State experts stress that it is too early to draw conclusions for the coming year.

“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to improve by April 1st so that we’re approaching the typical mark.”

While the drought map is entirely green, attention turns to maintaining this precious water balance during the coming seasons.
