Manchester United Set to Sign German Forward Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are finalising completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has half a year left on her contract, is known as a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival will be seen as a major signing for the WSL team.
Her exit from Munich has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while thanking the club's fans after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading forwards. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major boost to United’s attacking options. She has been highly consistent in front of goal in the Bundesliga.
- For seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club appear to be gathering positive momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional activity:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official stated: “She has become a critical component to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill enables her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”
Lundkvist, who has arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
