Ghostface OG Star the Actor Fears He Could Ruin the Franchise with the Seventh Installment.

The long-awaited horror film Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This new chapter marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, per tradition, be alongside Courtney Cox as reporter Gail Weathers, but they won't be the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a role you portrayed in your mid-20s when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard admits.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Characters

It has been established that a trio of distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, even though meeting their demise in previous installments. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and nearly unkillable cop Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Weight of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the series for the first occasion since a brief cameo is a long-held wish, even if he is apprehensive about the public's reaction. The actor vividly recalls the exact moment he received the offer from the series creator.

"I remember the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him posing the question. That moment is indelibly imprinted on my mind," he states. "Therefore I'm incredibly honored to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a part that lives in infamy, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now embodied in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."

The Fear of Letting Down the Fandom

Now that production has concluded, Lillard is waiting like the rest of us to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about not wanting to be the one who damages the beloved series.

"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard points out. "At the start, I have no idea if the movie's be successful. I don't know if people want to see me. I've certainly seen enough people come out and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of responsibility to not ruin the series. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"

Theories and Anticipation Abound

While many dedicated fans are eagerly awaiting Stu's return, the big question of how he and the others come back remains. Perhaps they live as manifestations in Sidney's mind, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, maybe they are somehow all alive in a strange communal scenario. The chance of a self-referential story, reminiscent of classic genre films, also exists.

Audiences will discover the truth when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
