"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just a key snag: The author likewise wants to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are not alone. Multiple high-profile admirers have also begged for the role.

The evidence suggests a special quality is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their musical journey performing shows at local delicatessens with their parents. Today, they are repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals often depict them marching in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a bass'," says Alana, the youngest of the trio. "That is the greatest honor. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate others to form a group."

"And thus everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The band are speaking from a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in the running for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the trio.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the women that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Humour

The project was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music inhabits that strange in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The words detail breakups and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent toughness demanded a different sonic direction – more raw and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a specific thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's candor shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters revealed some of their romantic horror stories.

Someone ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an international following.

But Haim will consistently be their number one priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
